The Compliment
Father’s Day morning, my client texted, “Thank you for making an amazing book!!! My husband and I just went through it and it brought us tears of joy! Can’t wait to make more!!”.
The Story is the Gift
After delivering a scrapbook or photo book project, I love hearing that my clients are happy with my work. It brings me great joy when the memory books I create touch them so deeply that it brings them to tears. I am thrilled when they are so happy that they want to use my services again. My work is not just about putting photos in a scrapbook; it is about preserving memories and telling a story. In this case, it is making this story a gift.
Creating the Gift
In this case, the story was a toddler’s first year of life. First, there were ultrasound, hospital, and family photos of relatives holding the new baby at home. Then, there were photos of his “firsts”: ferry boat ride, trip to a corn maze, Halloween, Christmas, airplane and train rides, and a Sounders soccer game. The story concluded with photos of his first birthday. We also included memorabilia in the book like: hospital bracelets, preparation lists, an “It’s a Boy!” button (which I had to photograph), and baby shower, Christmas and birthday cards. I also included baby hair from his first haircut. When designing, I combined travel themed pages with baby themed paper and embellishments she chose, and I decorated the pages. These memory-filled pages told the story of their travels and adventures, through their son’s first year of life.
The Scrapbook Tells the Story
This special scrapbook reminded them how quickly their son had grown and the fun times this young family of three has had together during his first year. Sometimes, clients make baby scrapbooks to organize photos and memorabilia, so they do not get lost. Often, clients make Baby First Year scrapbooks for their children to see what they were like as babies. This project was the first one in my 40 years of memory book making where I created a Baby’s First Year scrapbook as a Father’s Day gift. What a brilliant idea! After all, this scrapbook honors the gift that is their son, and is a gift of the story of their life together. Eventually, this scrapbook will also be a gift to their son because it is his story too. Their family will have this treasured scrapbook to enjoy and relive memories over and over again.
